Hello, I'm Dr. Glenn DuBois, Commissioner of the New Hampshire Community Technical College System, where "Going the Distance" is more than a distance learning term, it's what we do all the time. This year, the American Association of Community Colleges is celebrating the 100th anniversary of community colleges in America. Her in New Hampshire, we are having a different kind of celebration. For the last several years, your community colleges have been engaged in an evolution from vocational colleges to comprehensive community colleges. That means a lot more than a new name. To be a comprehensive community college means responding to the unmet needs of students, businesses, and communities. That may sound pretty straightforward. But, it requires a broad new committment to education in the global information age.

Let me inrtroduce you to some people who are also changing lives - their own lives as well as the lives of others. Mrs. Louise Martell is currently a student at our Community College in Berlin. She is having a wonderful experience that we will hear about in a few minutes. Mr Michael Chaney is director of the New Hampshire Community Technical Colleges Foundation Playing a huge role in working with businesses and alumni to help us strengthen our mission.. Mrs. Patricia Grenier is a student enrolled in our "Going the Distance" program, a special distance education partnership with New Hampshire Public Television without this program Patricia would not be able to go to college. And Mr. Benjamine Russell a 1998 graduate of our college in Manchester, where he excelled in the Ford Asset Program. He is currently employed at David Ford Lincoln Mercury in Keene. Let's start with you Louise, Tell us a little about yourself. I understand that it's your goal to transfer after graduation and pursue your baccalauriate degree.

Some people are surprised to learn that there is a community college within a 30 minute drive for most people in New Hampshire. Helping people go to college is important. One of the ways we help is through our new foundation. The New Hampshire Community Technical Colleges Foundation exists for the sole purpose of helping people go to college. The director of the foundation is Michael Chaney. Mike how does the foundation help?

AAA has come to the right place to see a great return on investment. We have excellent automotive programs throughout the system, and receive incredible support from manufacturers like Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, and GM. They know it's all about technology.

In Manchester we offer the Ford Asset Program, where students can get an incredible jump on their education. One of the programs biggest supporters is David Ford Lincoln Mercury in Keene. They sponsored Ben Russell. Ben, what doors did the Ford Asset Program open for you?
It's impossible to discuss access without talking a little bit about how hectic our lives have become. Community colleges understand that it is essential that students have acces to our programs on their schedules, not ours. One of the ways we offer flexibility is the Going The Distance program, This is a special initiative with New Hampshire Public Television. It allows students to enroll in courses and take classes by using the internet and television. Students have access to high quality instruction, with the convenience of a flexible schedule. Patricia, you're a Going the Distance student. How is it going?

As we move closer to an international information age, your Community Technical Colleges will become an ever larger and more visable part of the New Hampshire landscape. As we celebrate the centennial of community colleges in America, New Hampshire should be proud of the investment we are making in our state through community colleges. Through programs like Going the Distance your community colleges are changing thousands of lives. I would like to thank our guests, and urge you to get involved with your community college. Stop by any of our campuses in Berlin, Claremont, Concord, Laconia, Manchester, Nashua, or Stratham. Thank you for watching.
